Hope Unleashed

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have decided we are not able to safely hold Art Unleashed 2020. For those of you who may not know, Art Unleashed was our largest annual fundraiser which played a huge role in funding our life-saving work. Unfortunately, Art Unleashed and many of our other fundraising events have had to be postponed or canceled this year.

And yet, even though we are not able to raise funds to help us supply our community with essential services-- the need within our community is greater than ever. To help meet that need, we would like to announce Hope Unleashed.

How does it work?

Each week throughout the month of October, we will virtually highlight a different facet of what we do here at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City to save and improve the lives of the dogs and cats of our community! From our clinic, to our shelter, to our outreach programs, we aim to educate the public on the services we provide and how vital your individual support is to our mission!

This virtual fundraiser will be held exclusively on-line through email blasts to our supporters and through our social media channels. Sign up for email to be part of the fun. And be sure to follow our social pages, too!

The Golden Ticket

Each week will also feature a Golden Ticket drawing with pawsome prizes! During this fourth week of Hope Unleashed, from Monday, October 26 through Sunday, November 1, anyone donating $75 or more will be entered into the drawing. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated—and will be put to good use—but a donation of $75 enters you into the drawing. The winner of each week will be announced on Mondays on our Facebook and Instagram pages!

Our Shelter

An animal shelter is probably the first thing that comes to mind when you think “Humane Society”. HSGKC became the Kansas City area’s first no-kill shelter way back in 1994! And while that is only one facet of what we do, our dedicated shelter staff helps to find forever homes for hundreds of homeless animals every year!

We believe that each animal deserves a loving, safe home and an environment in which they can thrive. That is why we make every effort to ensure our adoptable animals are matched with their perfect humans! We know it takes just the right person and that the connection between pet and human can’t be forced. That is why no animal has a time limit on how long they may stay with us. We will love them and care for them as long as it takes!

Our Canine and Feline shelter staff members care for our resident cats and dogs, providing them with food, water, playtime, exercise, and love until they find their forever homes. Our cats are "free-range", as our CEO Kate Fields likes to call it. Meaning they are allowed to roam (and lounge) freely inside our cat rooms. Our dogs have dual indoor/outdoor runs, which allows them a fresh breeze and the opportunity to soak up some sunshine whenever they want! We also have three large yards for them to run and play in, as well as an agility yard for them to learn new skills.

At HSGKC, we believe pets are family. That’s why we spoil them here before they come home to you!

Help us help homeless pets by making a donation today. Donations to Hope Unleashed of $150 or more received on Monday, October 5 through Sunday, October 11 will be entered in the Golden Ticket drawing to win a Mecole Hardman autographed Chiefs football and Panoramic photograph of KC Chiefs Superbowl Parade!

Affordable CARE Clinic

HSGKC works tirelessly to save the lives of the animals most in need of help - the abused, neglected, abandoned, sick, and injured animals in our community. We see harrowing cases of illness and injury in homeless pets and give these animals a fighting chance through compassionate and lifesaving veterinary care. We know pet care is expensive, but we believe that cost should not stand in the way of keeping pets healthy and happy. That is why we strive to provide the highest standard of care for a lower cost.

Every year, our Affordable Care Clinic spays and neuters nearly 5,000 pets! These surgeries help keep pet populations in our community under control and are vital to the wellness of pet.

Our Affordable Care Clinic is a full-service veterinary clinic. Our services include:

  • Wellness Exams & Vaccinations
  • Preventative flea/tick/heartworm medications
  • Heartworm and FIV/FeLV tests
  • Heartworm treatment
  • Parvo treatment
  • Spay/neuter surgeries
  • X-Rays
  • Wound care
  • Other surgeries
  • Dentals
  • and more!

Having an accessible, affordable option for veterinary care helps our community keep pets in homes during difficult financial times. We are able to offer these services because our costs are subsidized by private donations from folks like you.

Please help us provide quality affordable health care for pets in need. Donations to Hope Unleashed of $150 or more received on Monday, October 12 through Sunday, October 18 will be entered in the Golden Ticket drawing to win a Wine and Kitchen Basket!

Ray of Hope

While we help the entire Greater Kansas City Area with our clinic, Ray of Hope is our pact with Wyandotte county to help the animals of this under served community.

Ray of Hope began as a partnership with Kansas City Kansas Animal Services to support them in caring for the sick and injured animals of our community and promote the adoptions of those animals into loving forever homes. But over the years, the Ray of Hope Program has developed into so much more. Ray of Hope is about the journey an animal takes—from their darkest days to their brightest and all we can do to ensure that transformation happens.

HSGKC’s veterinary staff provides medical exams, spays/neuter services, vaccinations, heartworm and FIV/Feline Leukemia tests, heartworm treatment and other medical care for the animals of KCKAS.

Dogs and cats who are seriously sick or injured, or need more extensive medical care than the city budget allows, are transferred to HSGKC. We provide the medical care needed and take on those high costs, including many dogs and puppies with Parvo who need hospitalization. We then help these wonderful and deserving pets find loving forever homes. This has helped bring the city shelter’s euthanasia rate down from over 80% to under 8%.

Additionally, we photograph the dogs and cats at the city shelter who are healthy and ready to find their perfect match and promote them on the KCKAS Petfinder page and through our social media channels. Everything we do, every day, we do for these animals.

And now, introducing our new Ray of Hope Outreach Program! We will be focusing on helping pets in KCK by going into under served neighborhoods and providing resources, veterinary care and education to those in need. Our Ray of Hope Outreach team is headed up by Andrea Knobbe, who brings 18 years of experience helping pets and people in KCK, strengthening our dedicated team. We are excited to provide this vital program to help save and improve the lives of pets and help keep them in their homes.

Be their Ray of Hope and help us help them. Donations to Hope Unleashed of $150 or more received on on Monday, October 19 through Sunday, October 25 will be entered in the Golden Ticket drawing to win a Garmin Gift Basket!

Community Outreach

While HSGKC’s outreach programs look a little different right now thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have our sights set high for 2021! We've been busy changing to meet the needs of our community. Our expanded outreach programs and compassionate bilingual staff are working hard to help our surrounding under served community-- all with the goal of keeping pets in homes!

What does that look like?

Pet Food Drive Thrus for KCK residents: This summer, thanks to a grant from the Pet Food Alliance, we began monthly Pet Food Drive Thrus to supply our community with free dog and cat food. Held at our shelter, each monthly event has helped over 175 KCK families provide food for their pets.

Feral Fixes: Our Feral Cat Clinics help to reduce the feline overpopulation in the greater Kansas City area. During one of these clinics, 150 cats can be surgically sterilized, vaccinated, ear-tipped, and re-released.

Vaccine and Microchip Clinics: Our Affordable Care Clinic offers vaccines and microchips at a discounted rate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. It is our mission to provide our community with the tools necessary to keep their pets healthy, happy, and in homes!

Education: Our staff and volunteers believe that education is the key to ending the cycle of cruelty toward animals, reducing pet overpopulation, and creating a more compassionate community. Through school-based presentations, on-site tours, and distributing literature we teach the importance of compassion toward all animals as well as what responsible pet ownership looks like and how to best take care of your pets at home. We believe these lessons, when instilled early on in a child’s life, will lead to better, more informed pet parents later down the road.

Please support our life-saving community outreach programs. Donations to Hope Unleashed of $75 or more received on Monday, October 26 through Sunday, November 1 will be entered in the Golden Ticket drawing to win a Boulevard Brewery Beer Basket & Gift Certificate!
