We
have a small staff and there are so many animals and people
who need our services. That's why we're always looking for
people who love animals and are interested in getting involved
in the community. Volunteers are an integral part of the
organization’s history and mission and provide support
to ensure that every animal receives the highest quality
of care and compassion. The Humane Society provides its volunteers
with meaningful work and the opportunity to learn and grow.
So, you want to be a volunteer?
We have many volunteer opportunities
available at The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City for
committed volunteers who are looking to make a difference.
The first step in becoming a HSGKC volunteer is to download
and fill out a volunteer
profile. After you have completed the profile, call Jo
Hickey, the Volunteer Coordinator, at (913) 596-1000, ext.
22, to schedule an interview. The interview will help us
determine what volunteer opportunities best suit your interests
and schedule! Our volunteers are then required to attend
a volunteer orientation and training, which are scheduled
take place the second Saturday of the month.
HSGKC volunteers must be 16
years of age or older to volunteer. Children under the age
of 16 may volunteer with the supervision of a parent or guardian.
Volunteer
Opportunities
There are many ways to get involved
as a volunteer, here are just a few. Specific volunteer
positions will be discussed during the interview.
Shelter Opportunities
Volunteers are needed at the shelter to
help socialize and exercise the animals and to provide assistance
to the staff. Walking dogs (must be 18 years of age or older
to walk dogs), petting and grooming cats, or doing laundry,
filing, paperwork, and outside yard work are some of the
ways volunteers help at the shelter. Because we have no set
time limits on how long a pet may stay at our shelter, many
pets are there for quite some time and need the exercise
and attention that volunteers provide.
Satellite Adoption
Events
We need volunteers to help with our satellite
adoptions, which generally take place on Saturdays. This
opportunity involves taking dogs and cats to other locations
in order to try to find homes for them. Volunteers can also
prepare the pets for these events by bathing and grooming
them at our shelter. We need persons who are especially comfortable
and experienced with dogs.
Special Events
Volunteers are needed to assist with special
events such as Dog-N-Jog, Art Unleashed and The Pet Telethon.
Much preparation goes into making these fund-raisers successful
and we really count on our volunteers to make it happen!
