2012 marks 100 years that The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City has been enriching the lives of dogs and cats living in the Kansas City area. Since its founding, countless lives of innocent animals have been saved and improved. Here at HSGKC we are proud to say that we are the oldest existing humane society in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
Originally named The Humane Society of Wyandotte County, HSGKC was founded by Sarah Jacobs in 1912. With the help of her sister, Henriette, they set out to find adoptive families for homeless pets and to improve living conditions for all animals, including livestock.
In 1994 HSGKC became the first no-kill shelter in Kansas City. HSGKC does not use euthanasia unless extreme medical or behavioral issues are present.
Even though we have a lot of work ahead of us, a lot has changed since HSGKC's doors opened. Thanks to generous donations and support by animal lovers, the lives of animals are constantly improving.
100 years later, one thing has stayed the same: our unswerving dedication to improving the lives of animals in the Kansas City Area. We pledge to continue the fight to improve the lives of animals today, tomorrow, and for another hundred years. Thank you for your support! We can't do what we do without you!
