Staff
Spotlight:
Audrey McClannahan

Audrey
McClannahan is one of the newest shelter staff additions, coming
to us in December. Audrey helps to man the front desk, take
phone calls, process payments and greet visitors. A strong
advocate for animals, Audrey has been making the most of her
first month at the shelter; and, though she claims to be more
of a dog person, Audrey admits that her constant view of the
cat room has impacted her preference. “I have to say
that I’ve liked the cats more,” she joked.
The 22 year old Kansas City native is no stranger to animals or advocacy. Audrey
has a full house with 6 dogs, one of which is a recently adopted puppy, and 2
birds and is currently studying Pre-Law at UMKC. Audrey admits that aside from
studying at UMKC, spending time with her family and playing with her dogs she
doesn’t really have time for hobbies. “I spend all my free time studying,” Audrey
laughed. But, it’s good to know that someone with the dedication and passion
that Audrey showcases is here at the shelter. In fact, it seems like dedication
and passion are the two common traits of the shelter staff, both new and seasoned.
When asked why she wanted to work here at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas
City, Audrey gave a simple, yet insightful reply. “I wanted to be an advocate
for animals,” she said, “I wanted to be somewhere that I could help
those who couldn’t help themselves.” Thankfully, Audrey was able
to find a place that fulfilled her desires, our shelter. Now if we could only
help cut down on her heavy course load!

Item of the
Week:
Masking and
Scotch Tapes
If you happen to drop by the shelter
this week, please bring in masking
and scotch tape. Tape is used in all aspects of the shelter
and clinic and a shortage of tape means a surplus of trouble!
Also, don’t forget that
the shelter recycles used printer cartridges and gets
a rebate for each one we take in to office supply stores-usually
$3 a cartridge! In fact, in 2009,
the shelter was able to save over $700 dollars solely through
ink cartridge donations. So, keep ‘em coming!
For
a list of other items and services we need, please check out
our Sit Up and
Beg Wish List. All of these items go to helping our cause
become more successful and our animals’ lives become
more enjoyable.

We wanted to share some exciting
highlights of 2009 with you. I hope you’ve enjoyed your time with the HSGKC in 2009
and are looking forward to another eventful year saving Kansas
City’s homeless pets.
• HSGKC
volunteers worked a total of over 11,000 hours! With
today’s economic value in mind,
that means that our volunteers did $222,750 of
work for the shelter!
• In addition to volunteer hours, 20% of the HSGKC volunteer team
gave a financial gift, with a total of $16,177.37 given.
• Our special events raised a total of $341,000 for
the shelter pets.
• The shelter’s intake was 2,094
pets (including
a pig, 2 chickens, 4 ducks, 1 alligator and 1 lizard). Of these pets 503
were adopted and 1,550 were given medical
care and then
transferred into a foster home, rescue group or other no kill shelter.
• Thanks to supporters of The Gabriel Fund – this
special Fund paid $38,765.94 in medical costs to
save 205 sick and injured pets. (With an average
of $189 spent per pet.)
Shelter Pets Had a Great Holiday
Season
|
Your
holiday donations helped Smiley & all of our shelter
pets! |
We would like to send out a HUGE
thank you to all of the individuals and groups who Adopted
the Shelter for the Holidays. Your contributions enabled
the shelter pets to have a happy, warm and caring holiday season
and ensured that they will be able to feel that love in the
coming days, as well. The true spirit of the holidays was certainly
showcased by our amazing donors!
Thank you to these people and groups that adopted the shelter: Sherri
Enright of Blue Cross Blue Shield, Tammy Conley, Rick and Jody
Collins, Kendra Bruington of Truman Medical Center, Stan Sakl
of Ferrell Gas, FMH Benefit Services, Banfield Pet Hospital of
Liberty and Tiffany Springs, Johnson County Behavioral Support
and Linda Lawson of CenterPoint Medical Center’s Sleep
Disorder Center.

Show Your Company’s
Support with a Jumbo Check
We are looking for a few more animal
lovers to sign up to be Jumbo Check presenters
at the 2010 Kansas City Pet Telethon.
You can do it yourself, with a volunteer group, with your family
or friends, or even get your whole company onboard! If you would
like to be part of the action, raise money for homeless pets
and present a Jumbo Check to Gary Lezak live on TV, please contact Lauren.
If you
are looking to give financially to or volunteer physically
with the shelter in 2010, make sure to check and see if your
employer offers a Matching Gift program for employee contributions. Many companies will match charitable
contributions made by their employees, typically at 50% or 100%!
Some companies will also donate a dollar amount to match volunteer
hours. Check with your company’s human resources department
to find out if they offer a matching gift program.
Matching gifts
enable your gift to be worth twice as much to the shelter while
giving your company a chance to pursue philanthropic causes. |
