Staff Member Highlight:
Peter Dahl
Dog Kennel Attendant

Peter with "Abby"

To say that Peter Dahl, HSGKC dog kennel attendant, is an animal lover would be an understatement. He has spent his days for the past three years caring for the dogs here at the Humane Society, and his nights with five horses, six indoor cats, several outdoor barn cats, seven dogs, and three parrots. (Peter lives in the country where he has lots of land to accommodate his herd.)

Working for the shelter has been especially rewarding for him as an animal lover. “Taking in animals with behavioral issues and working with them to get them adopted really makes me feel like we are making a difference,” says Peter.

One of his favorite shelter dogs was Keaton, a German Shepherd mix who came to the shelter fearful and untrusting. Through working with Keaton on commands and manners, Keaton’s ability to trust people grew. When Keaton was adopted earlier this year, because of Peter’s training, he was able to adjust easily to his new family and trust them completely.

To help you stay connected to the HSGKC, CyberTails will now start coming to you every other week. Recently, a volunteer suggested profiling HSGKC staff occasionally in CyberTails to help you get to know them better – we listened and Peter is the first staff member to be profiled.

Humane Education

"Tango"

Humane education is a vital part of our mission to help the homeless pets of Kansas City. Because pet overpopulation, neglect and cruelty are people problems, and not pet problems, nothing can ever be solved without increasing education and awareness. So invite Jo, our education specialist, to speak to your organization today.

For a volunteer project, also consider bringing friends from your club or organization down to volunteer for a day at the Humane Society.

Corporate Pet Pals

We still need corporate sponsors for Dog-n-Jog, coming up on June 8. Ask your employer today about becoming a Corporate Pet Pal. For a sponsorship of $500, your company will be recognized as an official sponsor on all 1,300 Dog-n-Jog volunteer t-shirts -- a promotional value of more than $1,000. With your sponsorship you will receive 20 free event tickets.

The Dog-n-Jog website is now up and running, so visit www.dognjog.org to register online or to download a paper entry form to mail in. If you have any question about this fantastic promotional opportunity, call Robin at 913-596-1000 x 14 or email her.

KC PET EXPO

The Pet Expo will be held April 19-20, at Hale Arena, just south of Kemper Arena. At this fun and educational event, many animal rescue groups and pet vendors set up booths to provide information and adopt out homeless animals. The Pet Expo is one of our biggest adoption events of the year!

We need volunteers to man our fun and informational booth. The shifts are short, lasting three to four hours. Once you have finished your shift, you can wander around and check out the festivities for yourself. Admission to Pet Expo for our volunteers is free, although there is a parking fee. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jo at 913-596-1000 x 22 or email her.

Item of the Month:
Large White Towels

Volunteers, lately you may have noticed those strange trays at the doorways to the kennel and the clinic. Filled with bleach soaked towels, these trays actually help stop the spread of disease throughout the shelter. Just by stepping both feet into the trays, the bottoms of your shoes will be disinfected, and outside invaders are prevented from harming the animals.

If you have any plain, white towels lying around in your linen closet, think of us and drop them by. For a list of other items and services we need, check out our Sit Up and Beg Wish List.
