Volunteer Profile:
Jeff Pierson

Jeff with "Rex" at the 2006 Reunion.

Jeff Pierson started volunteering at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City more than a year and a half ago. The best part about the job for him?

“Well, it got me a cool dog,” he said. “Plus, the people here are so nice.”

The dog Jeff’s referring to is a greyhound lab mix named Rex, whom he adopted only four months after beginning his work at the shelter.

Rex still visits the shelter on occasion. Most recently, Jeff said he brought Rex along to the 10th Annual Dog-N-Jog.

“Rex still recognizes people when he comes to visit,” Jeff said. “It’s great to bring him back once in a while.”

Working as a production supervisor and dealing with things like manufacturing and inventory control, Jeff has little time during the week and usually volunteers on the weekends. When Jeff comes in, he usually helps to socialize the dogs or play with the cats, sometimes even helping with the shelter’s many satellite adoption clinics.

According to Jeff, both his favorite and least favorite part of volunteering is seeing dogs go to good homes.

“I get to know them and I’ll miss them,” he said. “But I know it’s for the best.”

Another Success!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's Art Unleashed such a wonderful success. Whether you volunteered, attended, donated art or told a friend, we could not do it without you. As of last count we raised $50,000, which was higher than our goal. Thanks Again!

Keep Your Schedule Open

Ernie Biggs, the dueling piano bar, is partnering with HSGKC on its Grand Opening night mid to late September. All the proceeds from the cover charges will be donated to the shelter. Ernie Biggs piano players have over 3,000 songs in memory, so start pondering what song you will challenge them to play! Keep an eye out for an email with the date! Volunteers are needed to assist in gathering silent auction items and selling sponsorships.

Also, don’t forget to sign up to play on our Web site! All proceeds benefit the shelter. To help with this annual event or for more details, please email Christine Salyer.

Dog Handlers Needed

We're looking for volunteers to help out at the Central Veterinarian Conference, Monday September 17 at Bartle Hall. We'll be bringing some of our shelter dogs for the students to work with for behavior training and eye exam workshops. We've participated in this for several years and there's nothing done to our dogs that will harm them in any way. Volunteers are needed to handle the dogs when they're not in classes.

There are two shifts that day and we're still needing volunteers for the afternoon shift, 1:45pm to 5pm.

In return for our efforts the vets at our shelter get to attend the conference at no charge (which saves us several hundred dollars!) and we get some cash and usually lots of stuff to take back with us-- Gentle Leaders, toys, etc.

Contact Jana for more info or to sign up.

Wanted: Leashes & Collars

Due to an influx of adoptions (not a bad thing at all), we need you help in collecting small dog collars and leashes.

Many of you know that when people adopt from HSGKC, each animal goes home with a goodie bag that includes food, treats, toys and a collar and leash for dogs.

Most of these items are donated from the Sit Up and Beg Wish List. Download your copy today to organize a collection drive of your own.
