Volunteer Profile:
Ally McNitt

Ally with "Dustin" at a recent Petco satellite event.

Ally McNitt has never adopted an animal from the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t love them all.

Owner of an aging Lhasa Apso named Taylor, Ally has wanted to work with dogs for as long as she can remember. Once upon a time, Ally worked at a veterinary clinic and aspired to be a veterinarian one day herself.

Though her plans have changed since then and she now works as an administrative professional at the University of Kansas hospital, her love of dogs is still strong.

“If I can’t own 10,000 dogs, I can at least play with them,” she said.

Ally began volunteering at the shelter earlier this year. Though she recently got married and spent two weeks in the United Kingdom for her honeymoon, Ally is sure to make time for the animals.

When she volunteers on the weekends, Ally normally helps to wash dogs and socialize them, sometimes teaching them to play fetch. She also helps out at the shelter’s many satellite adoption clinics.

“My favorite part is washing the puppies, they’re just too funny,” she said.

Overall, Ally said that she’s very glad she started volunteering at the shelter.

“It’s the best part of my week,” she said.

Welcome Back!

We want to extend a special welcome to Jo Hickey our Volunteer Coordinator. She has been on maternity leave this summer. She returned to the office on Saturday, July 14 to welcome and train the newest class of volunteers to the shelter.

Jo's baby, David

Thank you!
To those who sent cards and well wishes, thank you so much. Also a special thank you to those of you who helped to fill my shoes while I was on maternity leave. Your time and energy has made my transition back to work very smooth.
~Jo

Tail Waggin' Tours

Your help is needed for the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City’s upcoming Tail Waggin’ Tours.

Our monthly tours take place the 4th Saturday of every month. Our next tour is Saturday, July 28 from 10 to 11am. The free tour will help Kansas City residents see first-hand how animals are given second chances when they come to the shelter.

The staff of the Humane Society believes the input of others can help to save and improve the lives of many more animals this year.

If volunteers at the shelter could help promote this event by informing or even attending with their friends, it could help a great deal. Several participants of previous tours have gone on to become volunteers.

Participants of the tour will not be asked to make financial contributions of any kind. Only their feedback is requested.

For more information or to learn how to send personal invitations to any animal lovers you know please contact Jo.

We Want to See You There!

Summer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean that the Humane Society will be! Let us know if you can help with any of the following activities:

• 10th Annual Art Unleashed:

Art Unleashed is a silent and live auction of original pet-themed artwork. It will be 7-10 pm, Friday, August 24 at The Uptown Theater. More than 200 incredible pieces of artwork will be available for purchase. Tickets are on sale online at artunleashedkc.org. Tickets are $25 until August 23 and $30 at the door.

Art Unleashed also needs volunteers from 5-10 pm on Friday August 24. Volunteer jobs could include serving food, monitoring art tables, greeting, wrapping and more! To sign up, please email Jo or Vicky Paddack.

• 3rd Annual Humane Society Golf Classic:

This year's tournament is on Saturday, September 29th at Swope Memorial Golf Course.

Volunteers are needed to assist in gathering silent auction items and selling sponsorships.

Needed: Paper Towels!

Things can get pretty messy here at the shelter with so many animals! We go through a lot of paper towels and right now we're having a major shortage. If you could help by dropping some off at the shelter we'd really appreciate it.

Donated goods and services are a huge help to us and save us lots of money. For a list of other items and services we need, download our Sit Up and Beg Wish List.

Watch for New
Humane Society Shirts

Thanks to the incredible artistic talents of volunteer Jen Rarey, we have two new humane society t-shirts available soon for purchase. Both designs come in a classic fit t-shirt (for both men and women) and a fitted version (for the ladies). Shirts can be ordered online beginning in mid August or by emailing Jo. Shirts are sold to the public for $14.95. Volunteers enjoy a volunteer discount and can purchase the shirts for only $8!
