Volunteer Highlight:
Puppy Love

Ricky & Nicole at the shelter with "Theo"

A year and a half ago Nicole Fizette began volunteering at the Humane Society because she loved animals and wanted to make a difference in the community. Little did she know her passion for animals would develop into something more than puppy love.

On Nicole's first day at the shelter she met Ricky Setticase. He was there to help train her during new volunteer orientation. Ricky is quick to share with others that he knew right away that Nicole was the girl for him. The two began volunteering together with the animals. Eventually their friendship grew into love.  Now, the animal-loving couple is engaged and will be married in April.

Nicole and Ricky help with satellite adoptions, new volunteer orientations and bathing and exercising the dogs.  Last year Ricky also helped get a new waste pump donated to the no-kill shelter which saved the HSGKC more than $3,500.   Together, they have three dogs, which have all been adopted from shelters. One dog, Katie, a pointer mix, was adopted from the HSGKC shelter.

It is because of their passion for animals and the fact that both are already established, that they decided to replace a traditional wedding gift registry with the HSGKC's  Sit up and Beg Wish List.  According to Nicole, they knew people would bring gifts even if they asked them not to, so instead they are asking their guests to donate to the shelter.

Nicole and Ricky are at the shelter almost every Saturday volunteering. “For me it’s an ongoing experience, it makes me feel good,” Nicole said. “I was worried it was going to be depressing, but it’s the opposite,” Nicole said.

KC Pet Expo!

Volunteer at this year’s Pet Expo! This year the Pet Expo will be held on April 28th and 29th at Hale Arena, near Kemper Arena. We need volunteers to help with the general information booth and the Wheel of Fun. Shifts will last 3-4 hours. Once your shift has ended you get to check out the event for yourself if you would like.

We'll also be bringing lots of dogs for adoption. Jana will be emailing satellite volunteers with those shift hours and details.

The Kansas City Pet Expo is an educational event that many animal rescue groups and vendors attend to help inform people about their products and adopt out animals.
