Volunteer Profile:
Cynthia Newbill

Cynthia with "Raven & Reece"

Cynthia Newbill was inspired to volunteer at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City after she adopted an ornery Pekingese named Maurice, or “Reece” for short. That was two and a half years ago, and Cynthia has now been volunteering at the shelter for more than a year.

“I had never adopted an animal from this kind of shelter before and I really liked what I saw,” she said. “I wanted to give back.”

In addition to Maurice, Cynthia also adopted two other dogs from the HSGKC named Raven and Aggie.

Cynthia works as a teacher at Parkville High School and finds it hard to leave her dogs at home alone after being gone all day. Sometimes she comes to volunteer after work during the school year, but most of her work gets done during the summer on the weekdays.

Cynthia has completed a number of unique tasks since she began volunteering. One project included creating a volunteer bulletin board to be placed outside the cat rooms. Another project included creating the “Paw Prints” historic display in the shelter’s main lobby.

Cynthia has also participated in a number of the shelter’s past special events, including Dog-n-Jog, Art Unleashed and the Kansas City Pet Telethon.

Despite helping with exciting events like these, Cynthia says that her favorite part of volunteering is working with such great people.

“Everyone is so nice and they all come from different places in the world,” she said. “They all come together for the animals, and I like that.”

Sherri Wells with Super Dog "Monty"

Party Animals

Super Dog Monty, Brody Bee and several of our adopted friends came back to visit at the 2007 Pet Reunion on October 27. Pets that brought toys for the shelter animals received a free photo from Piper Photography and boy were they generous.

"Brody" the Bee

Brody Bee, Super Dog Monty, and Hawaiian Sake were all Halloween Costumes winners, winning fabulous prizes for their people and themselves.

To top off a perfect party, Bruce Wayne was adopted by a couple who were attending the event with their “grand dogs” Eddie and Tootsie.

Pets Need Presents, Too

Looking to organize a holiday fundraiser for the animals? Look no further, because pets need presents too! Download your copy of the Humane Society’s Sit-Up & Beg Wish List to start making an impact on a shelter pet’s life today.

Another idea is to slip the Wish List in with your Holiday Party invites and ask your party attendees to bring a present for the shelter pets. It’s an easy way to help the pets and share your passion for animals with your friends and family.

Santa Paws

How can Santa be in two places at once you ask? This year Santa will be taking photos with pets at The Legends in Kansas City, KS Saturday, December 1 & 8 from 11am-3pm. The Legends management has arranged for Santa to fly down from the North Pole and JoAnne Piper of Piper Photography is volunteering her time & resources to capture the magic. We need volunteers to help greet people and be JoAnne's assistant. This is our first event at The Legends and we are really looking forward to it.

Santa will also be taking photos at Petsmart in Merriam (55th & Johnson Drive) Saturday, December 8 from 11am-4pm and Sunday December 16 from 11am-4pm at 115th & Metcalf. Petsmart provides the camera and Santa suit! If you were interested in being Santa, Santa's helper or a photographer, we would love to have your assistance. Petsmart is always a ton of fun!

If you are available to help with any of these dates or locations please email Jo.

Raise Money with the CHIEFS

Grab some friends, catch a Chief's game and raise good money for HSGKC. We need vendors for 3 of the 6 remaining Games at Arrowhead Stadium.  If you are 21 and can do steps, we'd love to have your help selling concessions in the upper deck. 5-10 volunteers are need for each 3 hour game.  If you would like to watch the Broncos, Raiders, Chargers, Titans, or KU/MU game for free and get a work out at the same time, email Jo.

Shop with the Pets in Mind

Are you searching for the perfect holiday gift for that hard to buy animal lover?

Search no more. The new HSGKC t-shirts ($16) and the 2008 Pets & Their People Calendar ($20) are the perfect gift for friends, family and co-workers.

In addition to the shirts and calendars, Sponsor-a-Pet is always a great present to give animals lovers. You can sponsor a shelter pet in someone’s honor for a 3, 6 or 12-month period with a $30, $55 or $100 gift.

Choose Animals for
Your United Way

Does your company participate in the annual United Way Campaign? Although the HSGKC is not a United Way charity (they only focus on people charities) you can still designate your United Way donations to benefit the animals here. Plus, it's easy and simple to do. Talk to your human resources department or United Way chairperson about how to "write in" The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City as your charity of choice.

Good Dog, Victor!

Did you catch Victor on the front page of The Kansas City Star on Wednesday, October 30? Victor was in costume on the Country Club Plaza “trick or treating” for the HSGKC shelter pets. Victor has raised more than $200 so far for the animals!
